"PLANE
DRAMA" AVERTED
by Mike Adams
As
I was a keen young pilot at the time, I managed to snaffle
the right hand seat for the departure from Brisbane. After
take-off, the pilot was leaning back in his seat and looking
out through the right hand cabin window. After a short
time, he returned his attention to the front. I wondered
what he was looking for so I had a bit of a look and noticed
in the mirror mounted near the top of the strut that the
right main undercarriage had not retracted. By this time
we were on approach to Blue Lagoon on Moreton Island so
he extended the downwind leg of the circuit and cycled
the landing gear. This time the RH main retracted and
I was happy to confirm this to the pilot and the landing
proceeded normally. I spoke to the pilot about the problem
and he said that this had happened before. I don't think
that anyone else was aware of the event as no part of
the undercarriage is visible from the passenger cabin.
