WHEN CALOUNDRA HAD ITS OWN AIRLINE

The Henebery Aviation Company was founded in 1967 by Kevin T. Henebery. The company operated scheduled passenger flights from Caloundra to Brisbane beginning in August 1972 using the IATA designator HZ. The company also operated charter and scenic flights as well as pilot training from its base at Caloundra Aerodrome. The company also maintained an office at 145 Bulcock Street, Caloundra. The last timetable issued was valid from 19 October 1986 until 2 March 1987 when it is believed that scheduled services ended. Although the Henebery hangar still stands, the terminal has made way for several large hangars. The access road to the site now bears the name Henebery Place in honour of its pioneering occupant.

CALOUNDRA AERODROME
WHEN THERE WAS ONLY HENEBERY

The first hangar on Caloundra Aerodrome was erected by Henebery Aviation Company next to their terminal building at right. The Henebery fleet of Cessna 172 VH-EIZ and Aztec VH-EMG are framed by the portals of the new hangar. (Picture: Henebery Collection)

Taken from a Henebery aircraft on final for Runway 23 at Caloundra, the newly completed hangar is at the right of the picture. The Glass House Mountains are visible in the distance. The windsock is approximately where the Queensland Air Museum is located today. (Picture: Henebery Collection)

One of the services advertised on the Henebery hangar was "Aerial Photos". What follows is a series of aerial photographs of Caloundra Aerodrome taken from Henebery aircraft. This view is looking to the south down Runway 23 with intersecting Runway 12/30 in the background. The road to the right of and parallel with Runway 23 is today Pathfinder Drive. Caloundra Road is in the foreground. What is particularly noteworthy about these photographs is the total lack of any other development around the aerodrome. (Picture: Henebery Collection)

Caloundra Aerodrome with Caloundra Road in the bottom right corner.

A later view of Caloundra Aerodrome looking north with additional hangars being erected along what is now Pathfinder Drive. Caloundra Road is in the top left corner. QAM now occupies much of the area in the bottom left corner.(Picture: Henebery Collection)

For comparison purposes, this view of Caloundra Aerodrome was taken in July 2014. The original Henebery hangar still stands although the roof has taken on the patina of the years!(Picture: Nick Sayer)

When Henebery commenced operations from Caloundra, drainage was always a problem. At times aircraft could not leave the runway so passengers were ferried to and from the terminal in cars, which often became bogged! Henebery's first Partenavia was delivered in July 1978 and even then passengers were required to 'walk the plank' to gain access to the terminal after prolonged rain.
