CALOUNDRA
AERODROME
WHEN THERE WAS ONLY HENEBERY

This
plaque commemorating the opening of Caloundra Air Field is fixed
to a rock adjacent to the public amenities building.

This
aerial photo of Caloundra Aerodrome was taken on 3 October 1974.
The Henebery passenger terminal and hangar are already in place.
The lack of houses is noteworthy.

|
The first
hangar on Caloundra Aerodrome was erected by Henebery Aviation
Company next to their terminal building at right. The Henebery
fleet of Cessna 172 VH-EIZ and Aztec VH-EMG are framed by the
portals of the new hangar.

Taken from
a Henebery aircraft on final for Runway 23 at Caloundra, the
newly completed hangar is at the right of the picture. The Glass
House Mountains are visible in the distance. The windsock is
approximately where the Queensland Air Museum is located today.

One
of the services advertised on the Henebery hangar was "Aerial
Photos". What follows is a series of aerial photographs
of Caloundra Aerodrome taken from Henebery aircraft. This view
is looking to the south down Runway 23 with intersecting Runway
12/30 in the background. The road to the right of and parallel
with Runway 23 is today Pathfinder Drive. Caloundra Road is
in the foreground. What is particularly noteworthy about these
photographs is the total lack of any other development around
the aerodrome. (Picture:

A later
view of Caloundra Aerodrome looking north with additional hangars
being erected along what is now Pathfinder Drive. Caloundra
Road is in the top left corner. QAM now occupies much of the
area in the bottom left corner.

For comparison
purposes, this view of Caloundra Aerodrome was taken in July
2014. The original Henebery hangar still stands although the
roof has taken on the patina of the years!(Picture:

When Henebery
commenced operations from Caloundra, drainage was always a problem.
At times aircraft could not leave the runway so passengers were
ferried to and from the terminal in cars, which often became
bogged! Henebery's first Partenavia was delivered in July 1978
and even then passengers were required to 'walk the plank' to
gain access to the terminal after prolonged rain. (Picture:
