In early 2000, Commercial Helicopters at Mudgee, NSW purchased three UH-1B from Summit Helicopters Inc. of Cloverdale, Virginia. Two aircraft were operational and the third, N781CC, was acquired as a source of parts. N781CC never took up an Australian identity. (Source: 5)
02MAR06
The parted-out airframe of N781CC was delivered to Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service at Broadmeadow, Newcastle having been donated by Commercial Helicopters. (Source: 5)
The cabin section of N781CC was converted to a Hoist Simulator for training helicopter rescue personnel. (Source: 6)
18OCT07
The converted Hoist Simulator was officially launched at Newcastle. (Source: 5)
08
One year later it was converted to perform the additional function as a full flight simulator and as such became the first CASA approved Bell 412 full flight simulator in Australia. Subsequently, when CASA wanted to certify it as a procedural trainer, the flight simulator facility was removed and fitted to a custom built fixture. (Source: 6)
The Hoist Simulator was still in use at Broadmeadow as recently as 2017. As later rescue helicopters have a wheeled undercarriage as opposed to skids, the simulator became obsolete due to the different method of cabin entry / egress when winching crew and patients.
