RFDS MAINTENANCE ARRANGEMENTS IN WA

by Geoff Goodall

RFDS (VIC Section) initially paid MMA on contract to operate the aircraft for the RFDS Derby base. When Bib Stillwell established CFS(WA) at Jandakot in 1965, he set out to undercut the existing long-term charter contracts, mostly held by Muir Airlines of WA and MMA. He approached RFDS (Vic Section) in Melbourne with an offer to take over the Derby operation at a rate below MMA and replace their Dove with a brand new Beech Queen Air through his CFS Moorabbin Beechcraft dealership. With the Queen Air, CFS installed a LAME at Derby, just for routine work up to 100 hourly inspections. More complex maintenance was given to MMA's engineers at Derby but annual inspections required a trip to Perth.

Hawker de Havilland were big in Perth. They built a hangar at Jandakot around 1965 for Beech GA sales and service, picking up the RFDS (WA) contract to maintain their large fleet of Barons. In 1967, Hawker de Havilland built a large hangar and office block at Perth Airport for heavy aircraft maintenance.
