1
This is believed to be "Willie the Squid" which represents UTRON ONE (later VC-1) at Barbers Point, Hawaii. A89-277 was delayed at Barbers Point for nine days in April 1962 after experiencing engine trouble on its delivery flight to Australia. However, the apparent freshness of the paint suggests that this marking might have been applied in June 1964 when the aircraft visited Barbers Point on exercises.
2
VP-19, NAS Moffett Field, California. (Note: 1)
3
Gold Kiwi - New Zealand obviously but unit unknown. The first known visit to NZ by A89-277 was in September 1973 so this marking was evidently applied by a New Zealand unit abroad.
4
Naval Air Station Barbers Point, Hawaii. (Note: 1)
5
VP-40 (U.S. Navy Patrol Squadron 40) known as the "Fighting Marlins" was based at Sangley Point in the Philippines from 1959 to1967 flying Martin P5M Marlins. The text indicates that A89-277 has been made an honorary member of VP-40. A89-277 was deployed to Sangley Point in April 1963.
6
The text reads: "Have Helo Will Hover HU-1". (Note: 1)
7
Red Buffalo captioned "Mabuhay AMD Sangley". Mabuhay is an expression of greetings in the Philippines. AMD is believed to represent Air Mobility Division. A89-277 was deployed to Sangley Point in April 1963.
8
Appears to be a red Sailfish (i.e. not a Swordfish or a Marlin)

NOTES
1
Confirmed by a contemporary physical inspection of the aircraft by John Bennett.
2
The antenna immediately aft of the serial number is for SARAH (Search And Rescue And Homing).
