Built by Bell Helicopter at Fort Worth, Texas. A17-012 was the last of an initial order of 12 Kiowa Light Observation Helicopters (A17-001 to A17-012) that were fully imported from the United States. A17-012 arrived at Brisbane Eagle Farm Airport on American Airlines Boeing 707-323CF N8417 from Fort Worth, Texas. A17-012 was accompanied by A17-009, 010 & 011). All twelve American built aircraft were delivered by B707-323CF N8417 as follows: (Source: 7 & 8)

It was proposed that the Kiowa should be known in Australian service as the Kalkadoon in honour of an indigenous tribe. To this end, a ceremony was held in Kalkadoon Park in Mount Isa on 7 October 1972 when one of the last survivors of the Kalkadoon tribe bestowed the name on A17-007 and fixed a boomerang styled decal to the cockpit doors of the helicopter. This was part of a scheme introduced by Bob Katter (Senior) to recognise Army equipment with Australian names. Bob Katter was Federal Member for Kennedy and Minister for the Army in the McMahon government from February 1972 until the government's defeat in December 1972. Subsequently the Kalkadoon name never stuck and the aircraft retained the name Kiowa.

A number of Kiowas were modified with the KNRP (Kiowa Navigation Rationalisation Project) digital cockpit configuration. As A17-012 was slated for retirement, it was not modified and retains the "Classic" instrument cockpit.

Following heavy rains, a raging torrent of water swept through Toowoomba, Qld with the loss of several lives. Kiowa A17-012 was one of many aircraft used in subsequent flood relief work.
