This wonderfully atmospheric image encapsulates the romance of air travel in the fifties. BCPA Douglas DC-6 VH-BPH Discovery is shown arriving at Canton Island. The image also emphasises the remoteness of Canton Island, a conveniently located speck in the vast Pacific Ocean which served solely as a refuelling stop on the long trans-Pacific crossing. The photographer is unknown so we are left to ponder the identity of the lady in red. Is she awaiting the arrival of someone special or is she just gazing wistfully out over the Pacific Ocean wishing she were somewhere else? The nose section of VH-BPH survives in Finland in the collection of Pekka Kauppi who kindly supplied this image. Photo: Pekka Kauppi Collection QUEENSLAND AIR MUSEUM www.qam.com.au |
